Why is the Sea horse Threatened?
The seahorse inhabits the shallow sea grass beds, mangroves, and coral reefs, which are not only the nurseries of the worlds oceans but also the interface of the ocean that is most heavily exploited by man.
These marine habitats are being destroyed very quickly due to population explosion, global warming, and unacceptable fishing methods.
This destruction is a very real threat not only to the seahorse but to the global marine environment. (Reference:6,7)
A seemingly insatiable demand for the seahorse by both the medicinal and aquarium trade also puts tremendous pressure on the wild populations as the consumption level is simply unsustainable. (Reference:1)
The seahorse may very well be the messenger of the sea and today its message is that we must take care of our oceans before it is too late.
