The seahorse was reviewed for placement unto CITES appendix II (Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species) this year but was not listed largely due to pressure from Project Seahorse whom is against international legislation which would protect the seahorse. The seahorse will be reviewed again for listing in 2002 after several discussion papers and workshops are presented, again largely by Project Seahorse.
This International Act will give the seahorse the same protection as giant clams and corals. It will prohibit the taking of these animals from any area where the wild population is considered to be unsustainable and/or unmanaged.
