It is not uncommon for seahorses to miss a transfer and drop the eggs. If this happens it takes 2 to 3 weeks for H.erectus to get ready to try again. The thing to remember is they need height to successfully mate. You mentioned they’re in a "smallish" tank. How small? In my expeirence tank size and seahorse age directly affect mating.
It’s great you are thinking of getting a larger tank, keep in mind it takes several weeks for a marine tank to cycle. Seahorses should never be added prior to the tank being fully cycled.
