Hi DCFishE,
I suggested 2 pairs because I have found they do better in groups. I like to keep a minimum of 3 but since I hate uneven numbers and like keeping pairs I usually go with at least 4 and recommend 4.
Many/most of the places selling CB seahorses are not breeding and rearing the seahorses in their own facilities which means the seahorses are in one or more holding facilities between the breeder and retailer. There are a few problems with this as I see it.
The retailers and holding facilities are not keeping these CB seahorses in any sort of a separate dedicated system so as a result they are exposed to 100s of 1000’s of wild caught fish and multiple pathogens. In addition they have been bagged, shipped, acclimated at least once mostly likely more before you get them.
The fish may or may not be well fed.
When you purchase your seahorses directly from the breeder like OR you eliminate the additional shipping stress as well as any exposure to wild caught fish. The seahorses are coming directly from the breeder into your tank.
HTH,
Leslie
