hazy/cloudy water quality

Dear Kay:

I have never tried keeping seahorses under a black light so I cannot tell you how they might react to such an arrangement.

But certain corals fluoresce brightly when exposed to black light and I have seen some very striking reef tanks that included black lights for this purpose. There are also some special aquarium decorations available that will glow with brilliant colors under black light.

You would just have to experiment to see how your seahorses respond to the black light, but I can tell you that the wavelengths emitted will have no effect whatsoever on the coloration of the seahorses themselves. If anything, they may produce excess melanin and darken in order to protect themselves against the UV…
