Today I got an African blue stripe pipefish. He is very small but would he eat seahorse fry once he gets bigger? He\’s is about an inch and a half right now. I also got some culpera too and my seahorses love it!
January 13, 2007 at 3:56 am #3275Pete GiwojnaGuestDear Nigel:
Congratulate on your new addition! I haven’t kept African blue stripe pipefish before so I can’t say for certain whether or not your pipefish might be inclined to dine on newborn seahorses once it is fully grown.
However, I can tell you that I find dwarf Gulf pipefish to be wonderful tankmates for Pixies or dwarf seahorses (Hippocampus zosterae). I’ve had adult breeding pairs of the dwarf Gulf pipefish that were 3-4 inches in length and they never showed the slightest interest in the tiny newborn Pixies. Their mouths were large enough to swallow volcano shrimp or red feeder shrimp (Halocaridina rubra) but they never bothered my dwarf seahorses or their babies in any way. So if you’re blue stripe pipefish is anything like the dwarf Gulf pipefish I’ve had, and it doesn’t grow any bigger than 3-4 inches, I suspect it would not be a serious threat to your seahorse fry.
The larger species of pipefish can and will predate seahorse fry under certain circumstances, but your little blue stripe might be okay, although there are never any guarantees about that sort of thing…
Best of luck with your pipefish and seahorses, Nigel!
Happy Trails!
Pete GiwojnaJanuary 13, 2007 at 10:57 am #3279nigelseahorseGuestThanks for the tip and by the way I looked up the species in the book "seahorses and their relatives" which I recommed. His mouth is too small for brine or mysis so he eats microplakton in the tank. Now my males ( william. I always have strange names for my seahorses like sarah, hector, suzane, and nigel)is looking bigger than ever. Now I’m almost positive he’s pregnant. I should be getting them any where from 4-14+ days. They are thriving in the new tank! I may not get the reidis my LFS sells because the mustangs my just make their own tank mates!! By the way how do I get pics to show up on this website? I have a Kodak EasyShare but aparently its not so easy to share.
