I am getting my 29 gallon high tank ready to house 2 seahorses. The tank has been cycling with fully cured live rock and live sand for 2 weeks and the rock is starting to haze over with brown algae and my water parameters are all good. How will I know when my tank is ready to start stocking it with livestock? I’m trying to be patient and not rush things, but I cannot wait to get my seahorses!

Just check your nitrites, they will spike and then drop to zero. If you used good, cured rock it might be a short cycle, but let it go anyway. I would still throw a little piece of raw shrimp (1/2′ or less of tail) in there to get a bigger cycle going, bigger, healthier nitrasoma and nitrabactor bacteria bed.

Normaly you will go through a brown algae, then green algae then cycled stage. two schools of thought, leave lights on normal and keep more light needing stuff alive. leave lights of and keep dark a kill of some possible nusance stuff. Thats a choice you have to make based on whats on your rock and what your goal is on final tank look.

I’m in the same boat now, cycling and running various tesst on flow temp stability and such. Now is the time to experiment, before the Sh’s get in there. Remember, nothing good happens fast in Saltwater, have fun
